Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support model developed by Deanna Martin at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 1973that uses peer-assisted study sessions to improve student retention and academic success in historically difficult courses. This model takes a non-remedial approach to learning that supports students towards academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn.”
