The major type of loan in the Federal program is the Stafford Student Loan.  Freshmen may borrow up to $3500.00 per academic year; Sophomores may borrow up to $4500.00 and Juniors and Seniors may borrow up to $5500.00. There are two types of Stafford Student Loans, Subsidized and Unsubsidized.  The Subsidized loan is need based and the federal government pays the interest while the student is in school. The Unsubsidized loan is not need based and the student will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed.
